In Toronto this week – Fri/Sat
In the short notice visit department – I’ll be in Tornto end of this week speaking at the CBC (private event). Had I gotten my act together perhaps I could have found a place to speak, but that’s unlikely at this point.
However, if any locals want to meet up and chat I’m game. I’m free Saturday for lunch or coffee and possibly Friday night.
Any Toronto site-seeing recommendations? I’m a city boy so I plan to do lots of walking, photographing and eating :)
So far, some suggestions from the kind Mr. Portigal:
I used to be a Torontonian. I’d encouarge you to walk Queen West, as far as Bathurst, maybe only Spadina. Up and down Spadina is great, going through Chinatown and with Kensington Market on the west. Lots to see, food to sample, people watching and so on.
My favorite new thing – an old thing that they fixed up – the Distillery District east of downtown – probably a streetcar ride to get out there – it sounds very cheesy – an old distillery fixed up into a shopping area but it’s really nicely done and very non-commercial and with artist spaces and so on. This was something I saw on my last trip; it was put together long after I left town.
The Bloor Street Strip – west of Spadina – is a fun area of nightlife and restaurants, but I’m sure it’s no longer the cool area. I used to live in the Annex just north of there, so I still happen to favor it.
Hey Scott,
How about at Dave Forde’s After Work Schmooze on Thursday (if you’re here) – more info at http://www.bitepro.com/?p=38 ?
Eating – there’s nothing like going for Dim Sum in Chinatown. There a whole bunch of great restaurants near Dundas and Spadina for dim sum. And there’s Kennsington Market just around the corner, it’s really the heart of Toronto.
The CBC? My wife works there. Are you there for an interview or a presentation? I want to give her a heads up to let you know what you are up to there. It would be great if she could attend.
As for Toronto, let me know if you need a guide. We could give you a tour downtown and get you to a decent pub or two, if you have time.
Drop up an email if you can.
