The discussion of power moves (devolves) to politics; the ability to influence decisions. Sources of power include your own character, specialized knowledge, reward authority, punishment authority, or resource control. At least that’s what I remember from grad school. :)
You mentioned the incremental growth or power based on repeated success, and to take some risk in ownership. Another growth potential is to provide resources to others; either actual or influential. In my own sphere I grow my power by simply encouraging others; an awareness of them as individuals often sparks their own positive self-growth.
