Quote of the Week

All artists are psychologically and emotionally driven to tell their stories. I’m not so sure we choose the stories – they choose you. We don’t ever completely understand the things that drive us, but I do believe that a good deal of the thrust of the direction of the choices I made, when I had a choice I made, when I had a choice about where my life was going to go, was back in deep pursuit of the mysteries of the past in order to find out ‘who am I, who am I going to be, where’s my future?”

– Bruce Springsteen, Rolling Stone 11/25/2010

Indeed. This quote comes from an interview about Springsteen’s album Darkness on the edge of town which, for those unfamiliar with his work, is a very dark story focused album. Unlike the pop songs he’s most known for, Darkness is a very different listening experience. As is another album of his called Nebraska.

    Darkness, eh?

As Muriel Rukeyser, poet, 1913-1980, said in Speed of Darkness

“The universe is made up of stories, not atoms”

Darkness is one of the best albums of all time! (I’m from Jersey, so maybe I’m biased.)

BTW, many scientists are the same way. We feel absolutely compelled to share our novel insights into the natural world with other people.

So a good deal of the thrust of the direction of his choices was back in the deep pursuit of the mysteries of the past. You know, that makes a lot of sense.
